Question: In any way has agriculture been *benefited* by the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect?

  1. That’s a great question! When I first went through University the impact of elevated CO2 (a contributor to greenhouse gases) was always considered a potential positive to crops where higher CO2 concentrations can enhance photosynthesis and consequently growth. There has been little evidence to suggest this is the case as other factors impact including elevated temperatures, drought and disease which often negates CO2 enrichment.

On the contrary I guess it depends on what you grow. Predictions of warmer climates suggest cooler regions such as southern England and northern Germany will be better suited to growing grapes and producing wine than traditional areas in France and Australia. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if this turns out to be true. I know from personal experience our vineyards are maturing much earlier and we may need to change what we do or where we grow plants in the future.
