Question: how do you help to improve the welfare of animals?

Keywords: ,

  1. Generally, I’m not involved in animal welfare except where it applies to my research. When we use animals we are trained in animal welfare procedures and educated on the ethics of animal use for research. We have rigorous policies in place to make sure animals under our care are treated respectively, comfortable and properly fed.

  2. Hey @purplelollipop24 (great handle!),

All of my research is in animal welfare, so as a scientist I like to think I help improve the welfare of animals significantly. The type of research projects I’m involved in differ – some projects help discover things we don’t yet know about animals (this is called basic or fundamental research). One example of this is the work I do developing new methods to measure animal welfare in sheep. This is aimed at improving animal welfare in the future by helping us to identify it better.

Other work I do is aimed at improving animal welfare immediately. An example of this is the work I do developing an animal welfare training program for Middle Eastern and South-East Asian countries. This project aims to teach animal handlers how to understand and treat animals better. This is referred to as applied research.

Are you interested in animal welfare?
