Hydroponics is a big deal now. Whether vertical systems become efficient enough really depends upon technology improvements and the overall cost or growing lettuce 20 stories above the ground or on the floor. The higher you go up the more work it is to supply water, light and temperature. Whether this outweighs the cost of shipping from locally grown areas or interstate where these resources may be plentiful is still to be answered. However, having many different options will ultimately be good.
I wasn’t really aware of this vertical farming trend until you started asking questions about it… well at least I didn’t know the official term for it, or that it was starting to happen on such a large scale. I’ve been looking into it and think it’s fascinating!
Our food production systems in coming decades will need to be intensified. Using less land and maximising light usage will be part of that.

Hi David
I don’t have much hope from aeroponics but aquaponics and vertical farming are definately here to stay.

Thanks for educating me 🙂
