Question: Should cage farming of chickens be banned?

Keywords: , , ,

  1. Hi flyingpig,

I dont think its necessary to cage chickens. Many producers have moved from battery cages to open pen systems or even free-range procedures. Give the chicken some space I say.

  2. I wouldn’t want to cage anyone, least of all those cute looking chickens.

  3. There are certainly improvements that can be made in the way we manage our chickens. We have to be very clear what the definition of cage, battery, and free range are. Also are people prepared to pay more for eggs to help the farmers lower the density?

  4. I think so. it’s cruel and unnecessary. Make sure you buy free range eggs 😉

  5. Great animal welfare question flyingpig!

Caging hens restricts their ability to express natural behaviour. This leads to other health related issues. This is why it’s important to move away from these production systems. That said, alternative solutions aren’t yet perfect either, but there is a large amount of research being done by industry to improve chicken welfare.

To reply to Kim’s question, I think there are ways that this can be done economically, and as it’s been shown, people are willing to pay higher prices to ethically produced food if they understand where the differences are and why they’re important.
