Probably an accidental discovery. Probably a clay pot was used for baking bread and it got left in there in hot fire and got baked and became hard and more durable. From that the people probably got the idea of baking clay in the oven to make it hard and learnt that they needed to raise the temp higher and they called these high temperature ovens, pottery kilns. An unintended experiment and someone was very observative; that’s the way many good discoveries have been made
