Good question. From what I understand many animals including dogs take ill when they consume both grapes and sultanas. For an unknown reason dogs will begin to vomit after ingesting grapes. A number of reports have suggested elevated calcium and nitrogen in the berries may be the cause. As berries develop and depending on the variety, climate and soil type, berries can accumulate high levels of organic nitrogen (amino acids) as well as calcium. The nitrogen is often a stress response to drought and temperature while the calcium flows through the plant to the berries and accumulates in cells. Some soils are rich in calcium which may enhance the calcium levels. Obviously dogs are sensitive to either or both. Obviously we need to know more about this. Great question!
