Question: Why do people settle down and stop hunting and gathering to lead a sedentary life if it is less healthy?

  1. Hi cloudstrife,

I’m not sure its less healthy. The ability to produce healthy and safe food has been a huge reason we live longer and healthier. I guess keeping up with exercise will also help to keep you healthy.

  2. Cloudstrife, we won’t have anything to eat today if we continued living that way; what will we keep hunting and gathering. Even with such high input and high tech agriculture and manufacturing, we are struggling to feed such a large population. Agriculture was “discovered” because of the need to grow more of what people wanted to eat and it is not sedentary, try asking any farmer even today. Desk jobs can be sedentary if you don’t fit exercise into your day.

  3. I agree – it may not be less healthy. Agronomy has helped us live longer and survive hardtimes because we can store food. The reason some settled down was that living as hunter gatherer is hard work and you go hungry lots of the time. Also you dont have time to intellectualise

  4. Hey Cloudstrife,

While I understand what you’re trying to say with our current lifestyle being unhealthy, I agree with the others that if we keep active etc. we can offset the issues seen with this urbanisation (lots of tv & desk jobs).

With the changes to agriculture (being able to produce more food more easily) people have been able to free up their time more, and so use it to do other things like research nutrition and health so we live longer, healthier lives 🙂
