Question: What will the Great Barrier Reef be like in 50-100 years?

  1. Hey Danig,

I don’t know the details of the current predictions for the Great Barrier Reef with climate change, but I do know it is predicted to move further south as northern sea temperature increase. Along with this however, it is expected that it will degrade and decline in size.

  2. Danig, because of environmental changes, the life supported by the reef may be affected.

  3. Hi danig,
Hopefully it will still be there, it is a special region of the country. I assume it will modify and adjust to changes in the environment, this has been going on for thousands/millions of years. I guess we’ll need to look at it carefully and respond when required.

  4. It is true that such a wonderful global treasure is at risk from many things. Ocean acidification as atmospheric CO2 rises, increasing sea temperature, increase runoff of nutrients from the land, poollution and pressures from mining, transport and tourism. But it has been around for a very long time and has survived. The speed of change is faster now than in the past so that will favour some species over others.
