Question: Just a question seeing as though it is international Pi day today (14th March), how important is mathematics in your role as an agricultural scientist?

  1. Hi Davidmcafee,

Very important. We use mathematics quite a bit in our work particularly in our characterisation of membrane transport proteins when calculating their activities. We also use a lot of statistical analysis in our work which relies on mathematics. It comes in basically at each step of our research in one way or another. Good question!

  2. Hey Davidmcafee,

Maths is important for my research too. I need to use maths to assess the validity of the results, and analyse whether or not they are robust or by chance (i.e. if I was to repeat the same experiment, would I get the same results?). This statistical analysis is common to almost all facets of science. That said, maths is definitely not my strength, I didn’t study it at uni, nor was it my favourite subject at school… so while much of science relates to maths, it shouldn’t be a deterrent if you don’t really like it.

  3. Very important, wouldn’t get too far with statistics and data analysis in our everyday work.

  4. It’s very important like the other guys said. So far in my experience I have only needed basic maths because all the data is handled by computer programs so you don’t need to know how to do the complicated maths! All I have needed to do is to enter the data and then interpret the results =) So you don’t have to be a maths genius for all science careers but maths is always super practical to be good at and you will be glad you can do it if you study hard at it 😉

  5. Maths is very important. I have several mathematicians working in my group.
