Question: How important is your research for the future

Keywords:

  1. Global food system is failing to deliver adequate quantities of healthy, nutritionally balanced food, especially to the resource-poor underprivileged people leading to micronutrient malnutrition. Micronutrient malnutrition, primarily the result of diets poor in vitamins and minerals, affects more than half of the world’s population, especially women and preschool children. The costs of these deficiencies in terms of lives lost, forgone economic growth, and poor quality of life are staggering. To reach the target of reducing the proportion of undernourished people, new technologies and approaches are needed to help address the problem. Biofortification of important crop plants (which is currently my research area) through biotechnological applications is a cost-effective and sustainable solution for alleviating micronutrient malnutrition. So, this research is very important for our future.

  2. @kaiser
Hopefully my research will provide some importance to others who follow on from me. As my main research topic is nitrogen use in plants, the intended outcome from the work will be in the development of plants which use nitrogen efficiently and which can contribute to sustainable agriculture. Ideally this will result in less nitrogen fertilisers used and better yields. We are not there yet but hopefully someday we will be.

  3. I don’t have my own research yet because I am still studying. However agricultural research is one of the most important areas of research for the future. Right now there are about 7billion people in the world. By the year 2050 there will be about 9billion. That’s a lot of people in a very short time compared to in the past so we are going to need to produce a lot more food than we are producing now in order to feed everyone. Agricultural researchers can help a lot by finding ways to increase crop yields using less land and water and finding the best crops to grow. It’s going to be very tough so we need lots of scientists working on it.

  4. Animal welfare is becoming more and more important. Being able to ensure the wellbeing of animals, as well as address public concerns and perceptions is an important thing. Animal welfare needs to fit in with the increasing global demand for food as described by @Dominique – ensuring that animals are produced in an ethical way, but the world’s need for food is being met.

  5. The research that the people in my organisation do, helps make better decisions for Australian agriculture, fisheries and forestry. I work with my staff to set the directions of the research, to make sure the qualiy is good, and also to make sure it is noticed.
I think it is very important, for example…We do a weekly report on climate and water storages, as well as food prices that goes straight ot the Prime Minister and our Minister every week.
